Highway 28 N, south of Fontana Dam. From Highway 28 as you approach
Fontana Dam, you'll come to a stop sign. A right turn will take
you to the dam and a left to Fontana Village. Turn left and go
approximately 2 miles. The Lewellyn Cove Nature Walk parking lot
is the best place to start.
About
Fontana Dam: Fontana Dam is the highest dam in the eastern
United States. Fontana Dam and Lake serve several purposes, chief
among them being flood regulation and power production. Releases
from the lake also benefit downstream navigation by contributing
to the water volume during periods of low flow. In the normal
operating cycle, the lake is drawn down during fall and winter
months to provide ample space for winter rains, and is allowed
to fill when danger of floods is passed.
"A beautiful place to kick back or go exploring. From the hot tup to the white water rafting to the casino, to rocking on the porch - fantastic!"
- Linn, Bev and Jet, Longwood, FL
